The African Queen and Shadows {Mom-ME Series}

I have been reading books like crazy lately.  I can't seem to get enough reading time and find myself reading here and there, 2 minutes at a time, between all the other things I'm required to do.  I've made a promise to myself that I will read more books this year.  It's a hobby I love and for far too long I have justified my lack of reading with feeble excuses about "cleaning", "daycare" and "kid activities".  I've analyzed my time available though, and found that I spent a lot of time sitting, telling myself I'll do this or that thing "when I have time".  I'm pretty sure I'm never going to "have time", so I'm actively making time.

The latest book I'm reading is The African Queen by C.S. Forester

Daddy Y loves the Hornblower series by Forester and recommended The African Queen to me after I had completed The Hunger Games series.  I have seen the movie based on the novel, starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn.  It ranks as one of my top ten movies and possibly my favorite love story.  I was excited to read the book.  Unfortunately, this is a book whose writing requires my full attention.  I am thoroughly enjoying the story (although I'm a little upset I couldn't purchase it for my Nook!) but the little distractions in my every day make this a book that is not entirely day time friendly for me.  It's one of those that requires I go in another room and close the door on everything else.  The storyline is fantastic, the writing excellent, but the language requires a little patience.

As a substitute for reading books during the day, one of the things I absolutely love to read is blogs.  There are so many fantastic blogs out there!  I've recently discovered one called Live Your Life by The Green Speck.  The writer is currently working on a fictional story called Shadows.  Every morning I've been checking for his latest installment.  I can't believe how much I'm enjoying it.  I think, for me, a small part of the enjoyment comes from the fact that he is writing it now.  I am reading it as it is produced.  As I'm reading it, I can see the process and I appreciate and recall what it feels like to write something you enjoy.  My blogging has been primarily an outlet for me to share whatever I'm thinking about, but the bigger purpose of this blog has been to help me rekindle my love of writing.  When I'm reading this blogger's work, it's like I can remember the feeling of being wholely absorbed by the storyline and the writing process.

This is my Mom-ME moment for the week.  What are you doing for you this week?

I'm beginning a series called Summer Mom-ME. Wait for it though.... it gets even better... it's going to be a weekly linky party for Mom-ME's to blog about Mom-ME things that maybe aren't entirely kid related. In fact, here is a list of guidelines to follow for this linky party:

  1. It's gotta be about you, not your kids.
  2. Therefore it can't be homeschooling or kid activity related.
  3. It CAN be fiction! (Sometimes momma's need a little imaginary get-away!)
  4. It CAN be something non-fiction that you enjoy!
  5. IT CANNOT BE about your kids. Yes, I know I said that one first. I feel it bares repeating. I know how you mommy types (meaning me) are!
Following these guidelines, write a post about you, for you, by you about any non-kid related thing you choose. Don't forget to attach a link back to my blog (sorry, there is no button for sharing, YET...).

Okay! Now it's your turn! Link up any thing you like! Try to make it something that will take us away from the week's worth of Mom moments that are coming!

  1. I am honored by the way you mentioned about my blog. It's a real privilege, and I can't express my happiness in words. Thanks Jennifer.

I hope I can write on and on midst your encouragement, and produce many more shadows :-)

Regarding Hunger Games, I am planning to buy it. What do you suggest?

Thanks again for reading my stories and liking my blog. It's just an ordinary attempt from my side to be in touch with my writing :-)

    1. I certainly hope you will continue writing!

As to Hunger Games, this is an excellent series. After you get to Chapter 10 you won't be able to put it down. I purchased and read all 3 after the prompting of my daughter and, although I need a little time for grieving after the 3rd book, it is a series that I will reread in the future. I highly recommend it.

  2. HI jennifer,

Felt really good to read this post. African Queen is one of my Fav. too. Buut I loved the movie more than the book . I have noticed that the first thing your mind feeds on is the one you like more. If it was the book , you love the book more, if it was the movie , you love the movie more. Is it same for you?

Have you seen Bridges of Madison County. Was really dissapointed by the book after seeign the movie. Meryl Streep was tooooooo good.

    1. So far I love the movie more than the book too. The characters in the movie are sweeter and a little easier to love. It's interesting to me though, because I ususally prefer the books to the movies.

I will add Bridges of Madison County to my book list. I've seen the movie, but it was years ago when it first came out. I'll read the book and then re-watch to movie for comparison. This will be something to look forward too! 8)

  3. It's unusual to like a movie better than a book, so to hear about two of them in the same breath? Wow! I haven't read the African Queen, although I did see the movie. Now I'm curious to read/see it again.

Mom-ME things? Mine would be so boring (well, besides the water cannon thing). Today while I'm sans-kids, I'll be having coffee with a BFF (J-B from my blog), banking, and buying cat food. Probably dinner too. Woohoo, right? ;)

    Have yourself a wonderful day.

P.S. Haiku is finally up - lightning took me out for a few days so it was late today! The horror!!

    1. I'm kind of reaching with my Mom-ME things... I wrote about a moment captured sitting on the porch with Daddy Y, then I wrote about a book. Next week is going to be a stretch... The Haiku really is a Mom-ME kind of thing, don't you think? 8) You have a great day as well. Enjoy your coffee time with your BFF!
